Wellness Retreat Lake District: Ideas For Your Staycation

Resolving to look after your sense of wellbeing in 2025? Bring these intentions with you on your next Lake District staycation, and enjoy some of the wellness activities that the area has to offer. We’ve suggested a few options that are certain to make you feel rebalanced, all enjoyed in one of the most serene settings in the country.

Enjoy a spa day

Did you know that there are several stunning spas located in the Lake District? You’ll find everything from full thermal experiences, to heated outdoor pools and sensual holistic treatments at these spots. Most options offer a half day package, where you can enjoy the facilities available for a couple of hours before you head back to your cosy log cabin. Some of our favourites, all within easy reach of Snittlegarth, include:

Lodore Falls: The Falls Spa

Located just half an hour from our accommodation, you’ll find one of the most ‘Instagrammed’ spa venues in the Lakes. Visitors to The Falls Spa can enjoy everything from a 2 hour morning view or twilight spa experience, to packages that include spa treatments, afternoon tea, or 2-course meals at the hotel’s onsite restaurant, Mizu Pan-Asian. Don’t miss the view from the outdoor pool, looking out onto Derwentwater and Cat Bells, and brave the sweltering Finnish Sauna.

Appleby Manor Garden Spa

The Appleby Manor Garden Spa is another great place to go if you’re in need of a ‘reset’. Here, you’ll have two outdoor pools to choose from, plus an indoor hydrotherapy pool and a sauna and steam room experience. The spa also offers treatments, so you can opt for a massage or a facial after you have enjoyed each area of this stunning venue.

Armathwaite Hall

The closest option that you have for a slice of uninterrupted bliss is Armathwaite Hall Spa, located only ten minutes from us. There’s various different packages to choose from, and the spa is set over two floors; take a dip in the infinity pool, head outside and enjoy the views from the outdoor hot tub, and make your way through the indoor thermal journey. You could even add a yoga class onto your time here, as the venue also has its own dedicated exercise studio.

Hot & cold therapy at La’al Sauna

This one is a bit of a hidden gem; La’al Sauna is a one of a kind experience in Cumbria, and it’s a must-try for wellness enthusiasts. A lovingly restored old horsebox now serves as a sauna, perfectly positioned on the shores of Lake Windermere. Visitors can enjoy the heat, before braving a cold plunge – it’s the ultimate natural spa experience.

It’s situated at Fell Foot in Newby Bridge, giving you a good reason to go explore some of the southern Lake District during your stay with us. The sauna does move around, so be sure to check its location when booking and secure your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. There are on-site changing rooms, showers, and toilets, and these facilities can be added onto your pass.

Take a hike with panoramic views

There’s no better way to experience pure peace than at the top of a mountain – and it’s a completely free way to tend to your sense of wellbeing! Of course, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing the perfect spot; Old Man Of Coniston, Raven Crag and Helvellyn are some of our favourite, breathtaking routes. Reach the peak, and take a moment to enjoy the scenery with a herbal tea from your flask. Doing this at sunrise will add to the feel-good factor, as you’ll get to savour these spectacular views before the usual crowds roll in.

Try a sound bath

If you’re open to trying something completely different, a sound bath might be a good addition for your next wellness staycation. If you’re not familiar with the concept, a sound bath is a meditative practice, using immersive sounds that fill the room and encourage a sense of mind-body connection and relaxation. The experience is said to reduce feelings of anxiety, and while there’s no solid science to prove this, it has even been said to lessen physical pain.

There’s frequent sound healing sessions held across different locations near us, take a look at Visit Lake District to find upcoming dates.

Go wild swimming

Wild swimming is one of the most popular outdoor wellness activities at the moment, and the Lake District boasts so many mesmerising places for an open-water dip. We’re not far from Bassenthwaite Lake, where visitors can park (respectfully, and in accordance with local rules) near the shoreline and leave belongings safely and enjoy this grounding, relaxing experience. If you’re a first-time wild swimmer, make sure you have judged the conditions well by bringing the right attire (a wetsuit, or costume), swimming cap, and a float. Swimming shoes might be beneficial too, where the shoreline can be quite rocky.

Soak up how freeing this experience is – we promise it’ll become addictive!
