About Us: Farm Stays In The Lake District
Our Farm
Snittlegarth was bought in 1945 by the Green family, and since then it has been passed through 3 generations. Our family farm is primarily permanent pasture for beef and sheep, but if you’re lucky, you might spot some of our chickens, pigs or horses from your window! Our farm stay boasts an unrivalled location near Ireby with views of Binsey fell, and there’s endless things to explore in the local area. Our Heritage
In the late 1800s and early 20th century, Snittlegarth was owned by Lord Gillford and extended to 12,000 acres. It was said Lord and Lady Gillford travelled from London by train and then horse and carriage to their country estate with guests including Emily Pankhurst, a key historic figure in the women’s suffrage movement.
The extensive parkland in front of Snittlegarth was planted in the early 1800s, with some spectacular oaks and limes. We’ve shared a few snapshots below of how our farm looked in the early 19th century, giving you an idea of how it has evolved since then.
The Wildlife
The woodlands that surround our farm are blessed with many species of British wildlife including roe deer, hares, and a range of British and garden birds. On the farm, we are passionate about all aspects of wildlife and conservation, and we pride ourselves on the variety of species that we live alongside. For many years the farm has been a part of different stewardship and conservation schemes to enhance British wildlife, flora and fauna.
dog friendly FARM STAY IN THE LAKE DISTRICT
You’ll find our three identical Lake District holiday lodges on the edge of our farm, and our luxury shepherd’s hut and cosy log cabins are close by. We chose to add accommodation to our farm to give visitors to Cumbria a unique experience for their stay, and there’s something to suit everyone. We also chose to welcome dogs into our farm stays, as we know how many people choose to enjoy the landscape that surrounds us with their furry friends in tow. We’re proud of the fact that this has made us one of the few dog-friendly Lake District farm stays in the region.
